In Bruno Bettleheim's book, The Uses of Enchantment, The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales, he states, "Fairy tales get across to the child in manifold form: that a struggle against severe difficulties in life is unavoidable, is an intrinsic part of human existance - but that if one does not shy away, but steadfastly meets unexpected and often unjust hardships, one masters all obstacles and at the end emerges victorious."
Two of our best selling fairy tale felt board stories, Castle Tales and Grandma's Favorites, address such struggles. Rapunzel is taken from her parents by a witch who casts and evil spell on her mother while she is pregnant. Rapunzel remains cheerful and is eventaully saved from her plight. St. George must slay a dragon to saves his people, and in Rumplestiltskin, a maiden is put in a precarious position - to spin straw into gold, by her bragging father.
With our fairy tale board stories, a child is introduced to hardship and finds that good eventually triumphs over evil. All of this is accomplished by the simple act of telling them stories.
