FELT BOARD TIPS
When doing felt board activities with very young children...

Remember To:

Practice Before Doing Them

  • Have story and activity cards to help you remember the sequence of each idea
  • Use voice inflections for the different characters
  • Tell stories at an appropriate pace, too slow or too fast and the children loose interest
  • Move the pieces around the board to give the activity or story even more action

Be Prepared

  • Know the activities you’re going to do
  • Have all of your felt pieces and props within easy reach
  • Have the felt pieces and props in order

Get the Children’s Attention As They Gather

  • Sing a related song or do a fingerplay
  • Set up the felt board and talk about the pieces with the children as they come together

Pick the Children’s Favorite Activities

  • Have  them readily available
  • Do them often. Young children “love” repetition

Keep Felt Pieces Hidden Until They Go On Board

  • Tuck them under your leg
  • Set them behind the felt board
  • Keep them in an envelope

Have As Few Pieces As Possible On Board At One Time

  • Put the pieces on the board one at a time
  • Take each piece off the board as soon as you have finished with it
